2019 Jeep Cherokee vs 2019 Ford Escape near Auburn, ME

Catering to the adventurous, those who need bigger cargo capacity, or families who need enhanced comfort on the road, midsize SUVs have been an attractive choice in recent years thanks to their refined styles and comparable fuel efficiencies.  Two of the top picks of today's market are the 2019 Jeep Cherokee and the Ford Escape.  Most recently, the Jeep Cherokee has received a redesign in 2018, attracting many new customers to convert to Jeep.  What's the hype about?  Today we compare these two vehicles to discover the Cherokee's new advantages.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Power & Handling

Efficiency and power is not a problem when it comes to the Cherokee's wheelhouse of capable powertrains and performance stats.  First up is the four-cylinder Tigershark MultiAir2 supplying you with a superior 180 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque.  This 2.4-liter engine can cruise for 490 miles on a single tank thanks to its EPA rated 31 mpg highway!  Coming in either front- or all-wheel drive, this base engine can tow up to 2,000 pounds.  Next up, available throughout FWD models and standard from midtier up is the 3.2-liter Pentastar six-cylinder.  Coming equipped with variable valve timing, this engine has a fair bit of efficiency itself despite the added performance.  Its 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque cruise at 29 mpg highway.  FWD vehicles paired with this engine supply similar towing numbers to the Tigershark, but with AWD the Pentastar maxes out its power to be able to bring along up to 4,500 pounds.  This is the engine that comes standard within the Trail Rated Trailhawk trim, its exclusive 4x4 system providing you with the best off-roading performance you'll find in the market.  Newly available in 2019 models is the turbopowered 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that situates itself as a happy medium.  It drives with a matched 31 mpg highway, and generates 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.  This high torque output lends to better traction and low or high gear performances, allowing the turbopowered four-cylinder to pull up to 4,000 pounds.  All Cherokees, no matter powertrain or drivetrain, comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

2019 Ford Escape Power & Handling

Three powertrains are also provided within the various trims of the Ford Escape.  Provided in the base model is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, able to provide you with 168 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque.  It also only comes in front-wheel drive in this trim; for better all-climate handling you'll have to move up.  Thirstier and with less gear range because of the standard six-speed automatic, this four-cylinder only gives you 29 mpg highway.  Higher trim vehicles provide you with a 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that drives forward with 179 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque--not much of an upgrade in power!  Its efficiency isn't much improved for all its turbo adjustments either, just moving to 30 mpg highway.  For any towing capabilities, you'll have to look to the highest Escape trim; the Titanium comes exclusively equipped with the top tier 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder to give you 245 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque.  This distinction doesn't come close to Jeep's signature performance, though.  It's only able to tow up to 3,500 pounds, and its low gear count doesn't lend to as much torque array compared to the Cherokee's nine-speed.  That means less capabilities off-road, too.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Features & Design

The recent remodeling has lent the Cherokee design cues inspired by its bigger sibling, the Grand Cherokee, and with it, a huge personality and conveyed confidence.  Tidy lines accent the sides of the vehicle and scallop the hood, all flowing back from the new nose and headlight designs.  Your passengers will be extremely comfortable within the 128 cu.ft cabin space thanks to 40 inches of legroom both front and back.  Trunk space lends for easy flexibility of goods and equipment thanks to its expanded 25 cu.ft size.  Anything that doesn't fit within can be easily strapped to the roof via standard roof racks.  Front and center on the dash is the latest Uconnect4 touchscreen system Jeep has to offer, equipped with Apple and Android smartphone integration, Bluetooth, voice commands of phone and audio functions, and available HD radio, navigation, and emergency crash response.  This screen comes in a standard seven-inch model, but upgrades to 8.4 inches from the midtier up.  No Cherokee is more unique than the Trailhawk that comes with bonus off-roading equipment such as an anti-glare hood decal, bright red tow hooks, four underbody skidplates, and added stability and maneuverability thanks to two more inches in width and one more in ground clearance.

2019 Ford Escape Features & Design

The Ford Escape last had an update in 2017, updating its looks to suit a modern classiness.  Its large, hexagonal grille can seem bulky looking, however.  It accents the horizontal compared to the Jeep's signature vertical seven slot grille design, making the vehicle seem wider than it is.  Also, while the Cherokee has updated to LED headlights for better brightness and visibility, the Ford still relies upon halogen.  Inside, you get a larger 35 cubic feet in the trunk, but this comes at the sacrifice of your passenger's legroom.  There's only 37 inches provided here.  The Ford's strength is greater hauling potential.  When the second row is folded down, you get nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space.  If you want technology, you'll have to move up in trim.  The base S doesn't even equip itself with a touchscreen, an interesting choice when they've become standard in most other vehicles of any class.  The second trim provides you with an eight-inch Ford Sync3 system, equally outfitted with smartphone integration, Bluetooth, and available GPS and HD radio.

Conclusions

As always, Jeep offers superior handling and performance on road and off with its more powerful engines equipped within the Cherokee.  The brand has honed and fine tuned its vehicles' 4x4 driving for years, and the results are stunning adventure vehicles that keep up with any trip you want to take, and virtually anywhere you want to go.  The Cherokee's recent remodel has only enhanced this SUV to be a package deal of sleek, modern style that suits the urban atmosphere just as much as the country backroads.  It offers greater base standards compared to the Escape, and specialized driving dynamics to suit a wide variety of road surfaces and weather conditions.  Interested in learning more?  Below is our reviews of the trifecta of Jeep's enterprising luxury SUV designs from the flagship Grand Cherokee to the sporty Compass.  You're guaranteed to find a capable and reliable SUV that perfectly suits your lifestyle needs in one of these vehicles' trims!
